Quick Question Monday : What are Cold End Glass Coatings For?

Recently we have covered the history of the glass bottle and answered the age-old question: Is Glass Really Made of Sand? With that bit of knowledge behind us lets cover another topic on glassware – Cold End Coatings.

What is Cold End Coating?

Cold end glass coating is a layer of thin film applied to glass bottles and jars during the manufacturing process. When you see the word “cold end”, you may assume there is also a “hot end” coating, and you will be right. Hot end coating is applied just before annealing and it used to help with cold end coating application, which is applied after annealing.

What is it for?

Cold end coatings is a protective film that gives the glass a smooth surface that resists scratching and other surface damage. Since glass bottles and jars often travel through conveyers and scuff against each other during transit, this coating prevent the glass from scratching or sticking together.

Common Type of Cold End Coatings

The following are three common Cold end Bottle Coatings:

Stearate Spray: Often used for pharmaceutical packaging, this coating is water soluble that allows ease of wash off prior to filling package with product.
Oleic Acid Vapor: This is a common lubricative glass coating that is used often for general use. This coating provides good bottle protection with minimum label adhesion problems.
Polyethylene Spray: When optimum bottle strength is required for all processes of manufacturing and filling of containers. This is the most permanent form of coating.
